from Not Always Right... II

10 Little Pints Of Joy

Grocery Store | Florida, USA

(A guy comes into my register with a pretty standard basket of groceries.)

Me: “Sir, did you only get one pint of Ben and Jerry’s?”

Customer: “Why?”

Me: “Well, it’s ‘Buy one, Get one free’ this week.”

Customer: “Hold on.” *runs off and returns a minute later with 9 more pints*

Me: “You must really like Ben and Jerry’s, huh?”

Customer: “I have a pregnant wife.”

Dear New Bagel Place,

Even though I love Panera with a passion that should really be reserved only for people, I decide to give you a chance. I set aside money from my food budget (yes set aside money!) to buy your ‘Bakers Dozen and 2 Cream Cheese’ deal. I try to go by twice but you are only open 6am to 3pm. This is difficult to do on my work schedule but I am determined to welcome you to the neighborhood.

Wednesday morning I rearrange my morning schedule so I am at your bagel shop right after 7am. I start work at 730 but it’s only 3 blocks away. I stand in a short-ish line and then order my baker’s dozen deal, a croissant sandwich breakfast sandwich (pregnant woman treat) and an orange juice. I am slightly sad that your OJ is from concentrate but every place in OK does that so I move on. You also do not have asiago cheese bagels, which are my favorite, but I am willing to try new things.

The young girl taking my order appears new and confused. I am gentle and speak slowly and give her plenty of time to get everything down. I think about asking to see what she wrote to make sure it’s correct but it seems rude. She gives me my total- $16. This is not correct. The Baker’s deal is $16 by itself. I tell her I think it’s supposed to be more than that. She is very confused. Boss Lady comes over. She seems stressed. She tells Confused Young Coed what she did wrong and rings up the order. I’m pretty sure they’re still low a dollar or so but decide not to stress anyone else out.

I then sit in your store 35 minutes. Yes 35 minutes! You see, instead of having the cashier girl grab the bakers dozen deals, which several people are ordering, at the time of purchase- thus insuring both accuracy and speed- you have it all written on a ticket which is then filled quite a bit later by the same people doing the breakfast sandwiches. You also have the cream cheese containers filled as they are ordered. It involves using a hard spatula to fill a container with cold cream cheese while people are waiting for their orders. This seems ineffective to me. Why not fill them before?

People are standing all around waiting patiently. You call Brandy. I get excited and get my bag. I look in and it is obvious this is not my order. I hand it back and another Brandy (who ordered after me) takes her meal and goes.

I wait 10 more minutes. Boss Lady hands me my meal and Baker’s Dozen box and apologizes for how long it has taken. I am gracious and friendly in assuring her I am not irritated. I look in the bag. My croissant sandwich for some reason is made on a cinnamon raisin bagel. I do NOT eat raisins and let you know politely that my sandwich was supposed to be croissant. Boss Lady seem both apologetic and irritated. She blames Confused Young Coed. My sandwich is made (taking an additional 5 minutes).

I leave, getting to work almost a half hour late. I leave the bagels in the car and take the cream cheese in with me to put in the work fridge.

That evening I get home and open my bagel box. I start sorting bagels to freeze. I have 2 raisin bagels in my box.

I decide to return them the next day and ask for them to be replaced- neither Nate or I will eat them and by this point I am slightly irritated.

The next day I cannot get out of the house in time to make a trip I have to assume will take more than 5 minutes. Friday morning I come in with my bagels and politely explain what happened and ask to have my bagels replaced. I hand Different Young Coed the dead grape bagels in a eco ziplock bag. Different Young Coed is friendly but says she’ll have to check. She brings over Boss Lady. Boss Lady tells me (in an 'I'm doing you a favor voice), “I’ll let it happen this time. Next time you really need to bring them back the next day.”

Boss Lady has wiped away all my patience and good cheer in an instant. I inform her I could not make it in yesterday. She hands me my bagels. I am at work before I realize she has given me 4 bagels instead of 2 but am sure it was not out of politeness but lack of paying attention to what I was asking for.

New Bagel Place, I tell you this story because I will not be back. I was willing to overlook a bad morning. I even apologized to you in my mind for bringing my bad mojo to your store. No longer! I will return to Panera where I have always been treated extremely well, including the time I went in with my ASL class and had to order without talking. I will not be overly positive if people ask about you.

…Welcome to the neighborhood.

Happiest Lunch Ever

So today I decided, very last minute, to leave campus for lunch. I didn't have anything to bring from home and so I had to buy regardless and I really was tired of the building I work in.

So I asked Peanut what he wanted for lunch. He said a burger and cheese fries (he's not really up on healthy versus non-healthy food yet). I agreed that would be reasonable since we had both been so good this week and I'm still a little under normal weight gain as of my appt. Wednesday.

***Although I must say this has been my weirdest craving. Normally I hate melted cheese but cheese fries have been a wish list item, on and off again, for weeks now.***

There are two places in town with good burgers and cheese fries in Stillwater: Eskimo Joe's (within walking distance, always busy, usually bad service, good food) and Goldie's (need to drive=lose parking spot, usually not too busy, reasonable service, good/ok food).

After some contemplation we decided Goldie's would end up being faster, even with having to drive (dues to the busy-ness and bad service of Joe's).

So we got in the car and started on our way. We had to pass Joe's to get to Goldie's and as I did so there was an amazing sight- almost no cars!!! Now I take lunch at 11 so most places are usually pretty slow still but Joe's is always busy. I decided to chance the bad service and go in since I was already there and they were so empty.(I ended up parked right in front where that white car is- amazing!)

I asked for a table for one someplace quiet and out of the way. They put me on the 2nd floor by a window with no one else in the room. It was heaven!!! I had brought a book (more on it later today) and was excited to get a few minutes to just read and eat and relax. My waiter was polite, attentive and friendly. I got my food quickly and everything was correct. I ended up not getting cheese fries because they only have a big size and that was way to big for me by myself but I got a burger and their regular seasoned fries.

I got to sit quietly in the sun looking out at trees, reading and eating with no one bothering me. I got a red Joe's cup (you get to keep them), even though I only ordered water. I then left Joe's, drove back to campus, found a spot almost as good as my original one and was back right on time. Happiest Lunch Ever!!!

St. Patrick's Day Post #2 - Music, Appetizers and Punch

Try this puzzle while you read:

Ok so last time I talked about necessary parts to St. Patrick's Day celebrations, besides the obligatory wearing green so you don't get pinched (which you should still definitely do cause no one likes to be pinched, at least in public). I listed music as one of those requirements. I hold by this. Having music playing while people are arriving and munching is pretty much critical to get in the mood.

The problem is I don't really remember a specific artist being emphasized. It seemed like everyone just brought any Celtic cds they had and we switched them around. That's why I mostly rely on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I got it off iTunes for free and they even have St. Patrick's Day specials. Just a fun blend of music. You'll probably discover a few songs you really like.

Next, appetizers...one rule. Keep it simple! Remember St. Patrick's Day food can be a little heavy if you're not used to it and you don't want to fill up on little things before hand. I recommend the following:
  • cheese and crackers
  • veggie tray
  • fruit (green grapes, kiwi, green apple slices for fun)
  • spinach dip and a good bread
  • hummus
  • celery and olives filled with cream cheese (I know this one's kind of hokey but we always had it)
Most importantly...PUNCH!!!

I love green St. Patrick's Day punch. When I was growing up it was pretty simple: sprite and lime sherbet. I like to add some pineapple juice to give it a little something more. Remember it doesn't need to be crazy. People will love to just have a little and then drink a more regular drink for the actual meal.

And now to prepare for Monday when I post the recipes here's your shopping list:
  • Corn Beef Brisket (get one for every 4-6 people, it will come with a spice packet inside)
  • Cabbage (1-2 for each brisket)
  • Carrots (I just buy a big bag of the baby ones- they're the perfect size)
  • Red Potatoes- if you can find the little tiny ones for a reasonable price get them, if not bigger ones will work we'll just cut them up
  • white vinegar and/or a good mustard and/or horseradish (this is for on the corned beef some people will like one or the other)
  • a good soda bread or rolls
And here are your answers from the puzzle above. Did you get it???

Tokyo Pot

On June 4th Nate, his parents and I went to a restaurant called Tokyo Pot. It is a shabu-shabu style restaurant. It's also part owned by the guy who owns our favorite sushi restaurant, Sushi House. It was way fun! We were celebrating Nate's parent's anniversary and my birthday.

This is how it works. They give you a plate of veggies and a plate of very thinly-sliced meat. Then you have a pot (or pots in our case) of boiling water in front of you.

You put all the veggies in the water (they take a while to cook) and then you dip the meat in the boiling water to cook it (6-8 seconds).

You eat the meat as you go: cooking it, dipping it in sauce and eating it with rice.

After all the meat is cooked your veggies are done and you eat the 'broth soup' that's been created by cooking your meat. It was way yummy! And really fun.

We had originally heard about this style of cooking because Brad (Nate's dad) had had this when he was in Japan on business. It was well worth it and not as expensive as I had feared. I would love to go again!

Birthdays and Anniversaries

So Friday we did go out to the Sushi House as promised. It was wonderful! We ended up going with some friends and their daughter. I don't think they were really 'sushi people' but they at least tried stuff. Here's our meal.

Here's the meal for the little girl, Destiny. Notice the cute carrot flowers.

Then we went and saw Iron Man. It was so good. I now have a major crush on Robert Downey Jr. Mmmmm.
