Five Pictures of Foley Cat

Double-Edged Sword

Peanut has been telling me lately how my stomach is little and not fat anymore since I'm not pregnant. Since I'm certainly not back to regular clothes yet, I love this.

However he also tells me that my boobs are enormous and/or humongous and to not hit anyone with them. ???

Crazy Things Peanut Has Said/Done Lately

1. Tried to brush Peanut's hair this morning. He got mad and said he needed crazy hair to look like Bapa (what we call Ox).

2. Ox gave Peanut gum while he (Peanut) was in the bath [note: I don't really approve of gum for little kids and in the bath just seems...weird but I couldn't think of a logical reason why it was worse than gum normally]. So we caught 'Nut take the gum out of his mouth twice, which means it automatically gets thrown away. Ox took the gum and threw it away. A few minutes later I checked on Peanut in the bath and noticed he was chewing gum. I asked him where he got it and he pointed to the bathroom trash. Yes the bathroom trash where Ox had wrapped it in tissue and thrown it away. I may never kiss Peanut's mouth again.

3. A couple nights ago I was chewing on 'Nuts big toe and he yelled, "Don't eat my big wild thing king of the toes!". Further discussion revealed his right foot has good wild thing king of the toes and his left foot has bad wild thing king of the toes.

4. Peanut talks about his future family a lot, specifically his wife. Basic facts:
  • Wife's name - Honky Donkey or Slonky Donkey
  • Wife - has long brown hair, like Mama; she is currently 4 years old (he is about to turn 3)
  • Kids - boy named Donka; girl named Dinka; girl called 'little sister' and named Dinki

5. Recently told us he's 'very disappointed in us' when he got in trouble.

6. We went to a Chines buffet for dinner and I got some sushi. Peanut grabbed the salmon of the top of a piece of sushi and asked "What is this?" The rule is if he touches it he has to try it. We told him it was fish and he had to take a bite because he took it off of mama's plate. He didn't want a bite so he stood up on his chair and shouted "Fish is not delicious for one little boy!"

7. The other day during 'Lay Down Rest Time' instead of going to the bathroom 10 feet away, Peanut chose to pee into his empty juice cup. ???

Life Doesn't Get Any Better

Straight out of a bath, in Bapa's spot on the bed, watching Cars, holding his Lightning McQueen and Mater toys (he bought Mater with his own chore money yesterday).

Does it ever feel like...

if you have a great morning your toddler and/or life in general will do something to piss you off as soon as possible after?
my previously beautiful artisan bread loaf with a handful of dough missing

A Rainy Day Walk

As someone with an incredibly short waist, this part of pregnancy becomes mostly about walking to try to get baby to shift down out of my ribs. What better way to accomplish that than a walk around the neighborhood jumping in puddles?
yes that is my finger. professional photographer...not so much.

Who is the best?

The Ox is the best just because he is.

Hmmm

What's the likelihood he'll come clean if washed? Not great, huh? Guess he'll have to live out there from now on. Good thing we're getting a replacement for in the house in the next couple months.

There is hope!

My two year old just gave me an unprompted apology. There is hope that he might turn out ok in spite of all his/my/his father's craziness. It was almost worth the pack of sticky notes he destroyed.

On another note: white suspenders. One of Peanut's teachers at church, a super sweet grandma, saw these suspenders and got them for 'Nut (Ox wears suspenders to church). What's the consensus, 'future therapy' or 'so cute it doesn't matter'?

This post has been written so I don't lose my mind

So I know I have several 'real' posts I want to write. Posts about all the wonderful things we did this summer, and the Perry parade, and more info on my poor Little Cat who has gotten hardly any space on this blog except as a reason for my vomiting. However I lost that do-hickey that takes picture off my phone and puts them on my computer so now I'll have to go to the Walmart and get a cd made at one of those kioskes etc. BUT I needed to write this post this exact minute.

Paenut has been sick since Thursday, not Thursday the day I'm writing this post, or Thursday just before that , but Thursday the 6th, two weeks ago. That evening he had a low fever. I didn't think much of it and since it was gone by the morning we went ahead with our trip with Grammie to the zoo and science museum. Peanut was kind of grumpy but that was it. Oh and I noticed a spot on the top of his foot where his sandal had been rubbing. Note to self: switch shoes for a couple of days.

Over the weekend he got worse, spiking a fever up to 103 a couple times. Still I was not concerned (he gets fevers pretty high very easily) and decided to wait it out and see if his body could kick this itself. However, Monday evening he was complaining that his skin and his leg hurt. We felt his leg, where the thigh meets the body and found his gland there was swollen to the size of a children's candy bar and rock hard. So we made a doctors appt.

The doctor asked about bug bites, Gibson didn't have any. So he checked out all the usual suspects and found that Peanuts ears and sinuses were pretty red. A slight possibility it was a bladder infection and since a virus should have cleared up by now, and all the options had the same treatment, I gave in and we started antibiotics.

Throughout that week (as with the initial weekend) we had spiking fevers that required cool showers with Peanut screaming as if it was amputation, periods of intense clingy-ness unseen since he stopped nursing, times when he took his medicine easily and times when we had to hold him down, constant worry about him getting enough liquid to stay hydrated, all interspersed with just enough moments of him telling me he loved me and I was the best mama ever to keep me from realizing we already have another on the way and he is now pretty much expendable. PS As is necessary, most of the bad moments came between 11pm and 3am.

After some more concern about the size of his gland, and Ox saying he thought the thing on his foot looked like a bug bite, we went back into the doctors and found out that Peanut probably had a spider bite causing most or all of his symptoms. The treatment was still antibiotics so we chose to stay with the stuff he was already on.

Now, let me note that at this point in the week I was really doing ok. Yes we were getting up a lot at night and Peanut was much more demanding during the day but I had adjusted my expectations of what could be done in a sick household and so, meals were simpler, only very basic chores were accomplished, I ignored the piles of dishes and I just spent a lot of time cuddling my baby boy, who often doesn't allow that nonsense. I was zen.

By Sunday Peanut was still grumpier and more tired than usual, but doing so much better, that we decided to go to church. We went the first hour and then I said I thought we should go home instead of taking Peanut to his nursery class. Ox disagreed. He has responsibilities at church and wanted to stay for his classes, and possibly he thought I was being a bit overprotective and/or using my sick son as an excuse so I could go take my pregnant body home for a nap. I will not deny any of those possibilities. So we stayed. In an uncharacteristic show of helicopter parenting I went to nursery class with Peanut.

***Even though I have certainly not said this aloud, and never would, and knowing Ox will read this, I am still going to take a moment to shout I told you so!!!!!!***

Now I wasn't really worried about him falling down in illness or spiking a 180 degree fever the second my back was turned but he was sick and grumpy and I just wanted to make sure he and/or his poor nursery teachers weren't overwhelmed. About a half hour in , when Peanut was throwing his 3rd or 4th tantrum about something like having to share the dinosaur toys or cleaning up for snack, I decided I was done. I took Peanut with me, we tried sitting in the adult class for about 30 seconds, and then we headed home. Peanut and I skipped family dinner at Ox's folks house and I prepared for a week of 'Nut slowly getting better as I kept our schedule light.

Monday he started vomiting. And then it was coming out all over. I washed him, I washed sheets, I washed blankets, I washed stuffed animals. There is literally not a blanket in this house that has not been washed since Monday. This lack of control of his digestive system lasted through yesterday (Wednesday). At first I thought it was just his body overwhelmed with antibiotics so I slipped probiotics into his juice and gave him yogurt whenever I thought he could keep it down.

However it turns out this was not caused by antibiotics...a little flu bug has hit half his nursery class this week. Yes a virus, not able to be taken out by the antibiotics he was already on. A virus ravaging his already worn out body. A virus that could have been avoided had he not gone to nursery class- hence the 'I told you so' above.

I'll be honest, this week I have not been so zen. I am tired. We were on the upward path and I was mentally moving out of 'sick kid' into normal routines. Peanut also has been unbelievably grumpy this week. He's never been sick this long before and has shown his disappointment in many wonderful ways such as: demanding one caregiver and refusing to deal with any other person (this preference can switch at a moments notice and is especially fun when Ox is at work), repeating anything you say to him, at the top of his longs prefaced with the words "it's not", refusing to eat all day and then being starving around 11pm, and letting us know often he doesn't like and/or love us. Now I take very little personally in these scenarios but Ox, and everyone else Peanut has encountered, seem to take these temper-tantrum words to heart and are honestly offended. Thus I get to deal with a screaming toddler and the hurt feelings of those who should really know better. Dear World, get over it.

So as Peanut's digestive system is mostly back on line (he had an egg and oatmeal for breakfast), why would this morning be when i needed to post? Because Ox just came home sick with the flu. Even as a model patient (who is cuddling with Peanut as I type this) he has thus far needed: water, a bendy straw, a puke bucket and his radio. Thank you for reading I'm going to go decide between dishes and laundry in the rest of these 'spare minutes' I have.

Grammie Loves

This morning:

Peanut: Who's Grammie's best boy?
L (guessing): Ummm you?
P: Bapa!

Sorry Tio Kit.

Also, 'Nuts new favorite toy is...toilet paper. He steals it from the bathroom and takes it all over the house shredding it everywhere. It makes me crazy. The thing is he's not just tearing it up to be destructive, every piece is carefully planned as some creature/animal and has an entire story told and acted out with them- before they're thrown randomly on the floor. I'm not sure how to rate this.
Creative- A, Messy- C, Expensive- ? Toilet paper is expensive but not really expensive...hmmm. Not sure.

Today: Why Being Two Is Awesome!

Running as fast as he can across the living room so the 'cape' blows out behind him

Note: So Ox was confused by the caption/picture. Peanut was running across the living room so his cape would blow out behind him but I made him pause to take a picture as I have an inability to take action shots.  This is a pause moment before the next run.

Least Favorite/Favorite

 A Least Favorite Chore

I don't like to clean my house. I don't find it relaxing or centering or refreshing or whatever else you 'like to clean my house' people find it. But there are some chores that I just do and aren't a big deal, and some chores that I really dislike ie the bathroom is an 'I don't mind that much chore', even the toilet.

However....

We don't have a dishwasher. I know, Bono should be told about my situation and some sort of relief fund should be set up in my name. But it's not even the dishes that are so bad (although they are not an 'I don't mind chore')- it's cleaning that blasted dish strainer that makes me contemplate burning down my house to avoid .

Why is it so difficult to clean? Why does dust and dirt and who-knows-what hide in every corner and crevice? How can I get up the enthusiasm to wash dishes when what I'm putting them in looks gross? I can't. And so before doing dishes I have to wash the strainer which makes washing dishes even less appealing. Sometimes I contemplate buying a darker color strainer so that even if it's not any cleaner, at least I don't notice it at much. You can be embarrassed of me.

A Favorite Recipe

Last night as we were going to sleep I asked Peanut if he would like muffins for breakfast. He said yes and then Ox piped up and mentioned casually (not really) that he'd love if I got up and had muffins ready for him to eat before work. So I did. I got up when Ox's alarm went off at 6 am and baked some of my favorite muffins. The absolute best part about it was that this recipe makes a ton of muffins and the batter can sit in your fridge for up to 6 weeks. So I really did only have to bake the muffins this morning, not make everything from scratch. Plus they're super delicious and pretty healthy.

6 Week Bran Muffins

2 c boiling water
5 t baking soda
1 c shortening
2 1/2 c sugar
4 eggs, beaten
6 c bran cereal
1 quart buttermilk
5 c flour
2 t salt
3 c stuff (raisins, nuts, craisins etc) - optional

Mix boiling water with baking soda. Let cool.

Cream shortening with sugar. Stir in all remaining ingredients. Fill greased or papered muffin tins.

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

You only need to make a dozen, or even less, muffins at a time. The rest of the batter goes in a air tight bowl in the fridge. DO NOT stir batter once you've refrigerated it. Then you scoop out and bake as needed. Marvelous!

Note: These are also excellent mini muffins. Just decrease cooking time to around 12 minute. Peanut loves them as mini muffins and when I brought them to church for the nursery class (18 mth to 3 year olds) the kids gobbled them up.

Note: I love these hot from the oven with peanut butter on top.

And then this happened...

So Monday night around 9ish L and Ox were lying (or is it laying?) in bed, when L looked over and caught sight of this guy (see below) gliding across the front of her dresser.

Percy was not big around (about an inch in diameter) but was close to 4 feet long. This is just after the release and you'll notice his head toward the top middle of the picture next to a smashed soda can and his tail all the way past the bottom of the picture.

She let out a very dignified squeak and motioned to Ox. They tried to catch this poor freaked out creature, but alas it was smarter and/or faster than they were and after tearing their room apart chasing it, they lost it. In their bedroom. So they slept at Ox's folks house (they were out of town).

The next morning L forced her younger sister, Hilly, to come over and help catch the creature, if it was still there, which L doubted, and mostly to put the room back together. Hilly came and luckily within the first 5 minutes in the room they found Percy (obviously they named him/her) curled up in L's wedding dress in the closet. L was better prepared this time and grabbed Percy with BBQ tongs and put him in a pillowcase.

Once Ox heard the news he insisted the victors come show their spoils to all his friends at work and they did so. Then Percy was released back into the wild, far from their house.

The VIP of this team was definitely Peanut who kept insisting he get to see and/or help in all aspects of the chase, was constantly underfoot and refused to leave 'Grammie's House' once there because she has the best toys.

Random Thoughts

1. Last time I was pregnant I received dozens of helpful comments about how I was going to be miserable being really fat and pregnant during the hot summer. As I believe I posted about back then, I was in an office with all menopausal old women and one very large man and so the AC was super high all the time and I actually spent the majority of the summer freezing. This summer...at home, with no ac (ok a window unit in the bedroom) and chasing a two-year old...I get it. It is hot. The end.

2. Apparently a lot of my friends were also huge slackers on updating their blogs this  summer and so have decided to do uber-posts summing up the summer. Since I am apparently a follower I believe I will steal this idea and so am working on it now. Give me a couple days; remember I'm a slacker.

3. People talk about the terrible two's. I think part of what makes them so hard is that half to three quarters of the time two year olds are so frickin awesome that when they do behave the very opposite of awesome it's like a blow to the psyche. Peanut is awesome! And yet my main daily goal is for me to not kill him before Ox gets home.

4. My favorite things about my Peanut right now:
  • Talks about himself in the third person as if narrating his own life. This morning, while playing in the pool (we were tigers at the time) he said, "The boy tiger needs help getting up the slide". Why is that so funny to me?
  • Has started giving kisses again (for a while they were gross), gives "humungous" hugs, cuddles, tells me I'm great, tells me he loves me, tells me I'm the best mama ever (although usually I'm the best mama ______ ever, as in tiger, t rex etc)
  • Is very decisive on who he is. He is NOT whatever nickname you want to call him. He is Big Boy, Or a multitude of animals or creatures but NOT pal or buckaroo or 'see you later alligator' etc. He wants to choose his identity.
  • Loves reading still. All the time.
  • Has gotten back on the teeth-brushing band wagon.
  • Loves dinosaurs, insects, animals and the human skeleton.
5. It seems like lots of friends have been all about their old people neighbors lately. Good for you. Old people can be awesome. I hate my old people neighbors. I use that word perfectly seriously. I consider hate to mean that you actually wish that person harm. I do. I mean, not fall down and break a hip harm (I'm not a monster) but if I had a magical potion that would make their lawn continuously grow at an alarming rate so they had to mow it multiple times a day, even in this heat, I would apply it without a moments delay. Right now I can see her in her front yard, smoking away with her little yappy dog and scanning the neighborhood for things she can complain about.

6. Sometimes the answer is still no, even when you use the word please. So why do we use it? Seems worthless to me if it is in no way magical. *things i have realized by teaching them to my child*

7. Little Cat (the parasite in my uterus) is very active. She warns me she is getting hungry by kicking me repeatedly about 15 minutes before the time I normally eat. Peanut has tried to tell her kicking is not allowed but she doesn't seem to feel the rules apply to her. Also she is healthy and doing well. Half the time Peanut tells me she is baby Simba. I think he will be disappointed when she is born without fur and claws, although I usually imagine her as a tiger doing her best to put one paw on my bladder, one on my spine, one shoving my stomach up into my esophagus and the other trying to kick it's way out through the front of my belly, all at the same time. Also I think sometimes she is head butting me.

8. A billion people I know are pregnant right now, including three of my sisters-in-law. This happened last time I was pregnant too. Crazy busy beginning of the year. ;)

Peanut is done entertaining himself and wants to sit on my lap. Since that usually results in him hitting buttons and accidentally elbowing me in the stomach I will have to stop typing now.

This is Oklahoma...

or at least my corner of it. You can be a little bit embarrassed; I am.
